All About Couplings
When ordering one of our Premium Kettles for a moonshine still, you have the option of having our welder install a 1” NPT coupling. Couplings are not absolutely necessary for distilling, but they can come in handy for a variety of purposes if you choose to have one installed. Also, all coupling pricing includes installation.
What is a Coupling?
First off, let’s look at what a coupling actually is. It’s basically a small pipe that is threaded inside and welded through the wall of a premium kettle for a moonshine still. Note that we do not install couplings on standard kettles because the walls of those kettles are too thin.
What Are Couplings For?
People choose to install couplings for different reasons, but the most popular two reasons are as follows:
1. To have a drain put in.
A coupling at the bottom of your moonshine still's premium kettle can act as a drain so that when you’re done with your wash, you can drain what’s left instead of having to tip the kettle over and dump it out. In this case, you also need to get a plug in order to plug the drain.
2. To use an internal heating element.
If you’re planning to use a hotplate or a band heater, you wouldn’t need a coupling installed for this reason. Couplings that are used for internal heating elements are placed a bit higher up on the kettle of the moonshine still for inserting the internal heating element. The only thing about using an internal heating element is that when you’re doing grains, there is a higher risk of scorching your wash than if you used a different types of heating element, like say, a band heater. Also, please note that we don’t carry internal heating elements at this time, but that doesn’t mean that we never will. Just let us know if this is something you’d like us to get in stock.
Do I Need a Coupling?
Sometimes newbies will order couplings on their premium kettle even though they don’t know what they’re for. If you don’t need your kettle to have a drain and if you’re not going to use an internal heating element, the truth is that you don’t need to spend the extra money on a coupling. If you do need a coupling, please leave a comment with your order to let us know if you’re using it for a heating element or for a drain so our welder will know where to put your coupling. Remember, couplings are not essential for distilling with a moonshine still, but you may or may not choose to have one added depending on your own personal needs.
