Rick’s Picks™ Whiskey Mash Kits – Bourbon, Rye & Grain Mash Kits for Distilling

The Rick’s Picks™ Whiskey Mash Kit series was developed by Certified Bourbon Steward Rick Morris for hobby distillers who want real grain recipes instead of sugar washes. Each kit contains traditional mash bill ingredients including real grain, enzymes, and distillers yeast to produce an authentic whiskey mash for home distilling.

These whiskey mash kits are designed for pot still or reflux still distillation and are formulated to ferment to approximately 9–10% ABV, similar to commercial distillery mash. Each kit provides the correct grain ratio for classic bourbon, rye, corn whiskey, and malt whiskey styles.

Unlike simple alcohol washes, these grain mash kits use real corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley to create true whiskey flavor. Professional enzymes are included to ensure reliable starch conversion and consistent fermentation results.

Designed for Real Whiskey Making

These bourbon mash kits and whiskey grain kits are formulated to give consistent results even for beginners. Flaked grains allow easy starch conversion without cooking, while alpha-amylase enzymes ensure reliable mash conversion.

The included distillers yeast contains gluco-amylase enzymes that help complete conversion for full fermentation, allowing the mash to reach the correct alcohol level before distillation.

Rice hulls are included in most kits to keep the mash loose and easy to stir, especially when fermenting and distilling on the grain.

Oak Aging for Best Flavor

For best results, distill the mash and age the spirit on new charred oak. Small barrels will age faster than large barrels, and temperature changes can help accelerate maturation.

Many distillers prefer to ferment and distill on the grain for the most traditional bourbon and whiskey flavor.

Whiskey Mash Kit FAQ

What is a whiskey mash kit?

A whiskey mash kit contains real grain, enzymes, and distillers yeast used to make a fermentation mash for distilling. Unlike sugar washes, mash kits use traditional grain recipes similar to commercial bourbon, rye, and whiskey mash bills.

Can I make real bourbon with a mash kit?

Yes. Rick’s Picks™ mash kits use traditional bourbon mash bills made with corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley. When fermented, distilled, and aged on new charred oak, they produce true bourbon-style whiskey.

How much alcohol does the mash produce?

Most Rick’s Picks™ mash kits are designed to ferment to about 9–10% ABV before distillation. This gives good yield while maintaining strong grain flavor, without stressing the yeast and causing off-flavors..

Do I need enzymes to make whiskey mash?

Yes. Enzymes help convert starch in the grain into fermentable sugar. Rick’s Picks™ mash kits include alpha-amylase and yeast with gluco-amylase enzymes to ensure reliable conversion and fermentation.

Can I ferment and distill on the grain?

Yes. These mash kits are designed so the mash can be fermented and distilled on the grain, which is the traditional method used for bourbon and many craft whiskeys.

Do I need a pot still or reflux still?

You can use either. Pot stills produce more traditional whiskey flavor, while reflux stills produce cleaner spirit. Pot distilling is preferred, but both work well with these mash kits.

How long should whiskey be aged?

When aged in a small barrel, good flavor often develops in 3–6 weeks. Larger barrels require longer aging. Temperature changes can help speed the aging process.

What equipment do I need to use a mash kit?

You will need a brew kettle, fermenter, airlock, thermometer, hydrometer, and a still. Most hobby distilling setups already include these items.

Are these mash kits good for beginners?

Yes. These kits use flaked grains for easy mashing and include enzymes for reliable conversion, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced distillers.
