Create a rich, full-bodied craft bourbon mash with the Rick’s Picks™ Mashhouse Bourbon Mash Kit, a premium whiskey mash kit developed by Certified Bourbon Steward Rick Morris for distillers who want the bold, grain-forward character of modern small distillery bourbons.
This recipe uses a high percentage of corn balanced with malted barley to produce a smooth, sweet mash with excellent body and depth of flavor. The simple two-grain bourbon mash bill allows the natural corn character to shine while the malted barley provides the enzymes needed for reliable conversion and a clean fermentation.
Flaked corn makes mashing easy without cooking, and professional alpha-amylase enzymes ensure efficient starch conversion. The included distillers yeast with gluco-amylase enzymes helps the mash ferment completely to approximately 9–10% ABV, making this a powerful grain mash kit for home distilling.
Rice hulls are included to keep the mash loose and easy to stir, making this kit ideal for fermenting and distilling on the grain using traditional methods.
This mash bill produces a spirit that responds especially well to heavy oak aging. When aged in new charred oak and bottled at higher proof, it develops deep caramel, vanilla, and toasted wood flavors with a rich, oily mouthfeel. This is Rick Morris’s personal favorite style of bourbon when aged heavily and enjoyed at barrel strength.
Batch Size & Volume
This recipe uses 9–9.5 gallons of water with a 19 lb grain bill.
Total mash volume with grain is approximately 10.5–11 gallons.
If the grain is removed before fermentation or distillation, the remaining liquid will be approximately 7 gallons.
For best results, we recommend fermenting on the grain.
When fermented properly, the wash will typically reach approximately 9–10% ABV before distillation.
Flavor Profile
Sweet and full-bodied with strong corn character, warm caramel notes, and a rich mouthfeel. Develops deep vanilla, toasted oak, and light smoke flavors when aged on new charred oak.

Aging Tip
