Rick’s Picks™ 4-Grain Bourbon Whiskey Kit
Make authentic, full-flavored bourbon at home with the Rick’s Picks™ 4-Grain Bourbon Kit, developed by Certified Bourbon Steward Rick Morris for distillers who want real mash bills and real whiskey character.
This kit uses a traditional four-grain recipe built on a high corn base, balanced with wheat for smoothness, rye for spice, and malted barley for conversion and depth of flavor. The result is a rich, well-rounded bourbon mash designed to ferment cleanly, convert efficiently, and produce excellent yield while maintaining true grain character.
Unlike simple sugar washes, this kit uses real flaked grains for easy mashing and professional-grade enzymes to ensure reliable starch conversion and complete fermentation, even for beginners. The included distillers yeast with gluco-amylase enzymes helps the mash reach approximately 9–10% ABV before distillation, providing excellent efficiency without sacrificing flavor.
Rice hulls are included to improve mash consistency and reduce clumping, making this kit ideal for fermenting and distilling on the grain, just as traditional bourbon is made.
Batch Size & Volume
This recipe uses 9–9.5 gallons of water with a 19 lb grain bill.
Total mash volume with grain is approximately 10.5–11 gallons.
If the grain is removed before fermentation or distillation, the remaining liquid will be approximately 7 gallons.
For best results, we recommend fermenting on the grain.
When fermented properly, the wash will typically reach approximately 9–10% ABV before distillation.
Flavor Profile
Rich and smooth with sweet corn character, gentle spice, and warm vanilla notes. Wheat adds softness, rye provides a light peppery bite, and malted barley contributes subtle nutty depth for a classic bourbon finish.
