Rick’s Picks™ Kentucky Style Bourbon Mash Kit – Classic Kentucky Bourbon Grain Kit
Make a smooth, well-balanced bourbon at home with the Rick’s Picks™ Kentucky Style Bourbon Mash Kit, a premium bourbon mash kit developed by Certified Bourbon Steward Rick Morris for distillers who want the traditional flavor of classic Kentucky bourbon.
This recipe uses a corn-forward bourbon mash bill with a small amount of rye for gentle spice and extra depth, supported by malted barley for reliable conversion and clean fermentation. The result is a rich, smooth whiskey mash with excellent balance and strong oak character after aging.
Flaked grains allow easy mashing without cooking, while professional alpha-amylase enzymes ensure efficient starch conversion. The included distillers yeast with gluco-amylase enzymes allows the mash to ferment completely to approximately 9–10% ABV while maintaining full grain flavor.
Rice hulls are included to keep the mash loose and easy to stir, making this home distilling mash kit ideal for fermenting and distilling on the grain using traditional methods.
This style produces a classic bourbon profile that develops deep caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak flavors when aged on new charred oak.
Batch Size & Volume
This recipe uses 9–9.5 gallons of water with a 19 lb grain bill.
Total mash volume with grain is approximately 10.5–11 gallons.
If the grain is removed before fermentation or distillation, the remaining liquid will be approximately 7 gallons.
For best results, we recommend fermenting on the grain.
When fermented properly, the wash will typically reach approximately 9–10% ABV before distillation.
